H. 'Reaching New Heights' a 2012 introduction by Bobby Baxter

H. 'Reaching New Heights'
(Baxter, 2011)

H. 'Reaching New Heights' is not only one of my daylilies. "Reaching New Heights" is also a motivational statement and goal of Daylilies of North Carolina.

As a flower, H. 'Reaching New Heights', registered at 68", is one of the tallest daylilies of all time. The AHS Registration Database shows 43 registered cultivars of 68" or higher, and only 10 registered cultivars of 74" or higher. In 2010 & 2011, it exceeded 74" in my garden.

Motivationally, "Reaching New Heights" guides my hybridizing and passion for the daylily. As the leading hybridizer of high percentage (over 51%) polymerous daylilies with more than 20 registrations I am also an advocate of encouraging the promotion and advanced development of the form. By pricing my polymerous daylilies affordably and sharing information freely, I believe more daylily fanciers will grow & enjoy the polys, and more gardeners will be hybridizing them.

I also challenge hybridizers of the spider form of hemerocallis to work toward "eight-legged" spiders as genuine arachnids have.

Fractured Symmetry
Hemerocallis ‘Fractured Symmetry’ (Baxter, 2012)

Hemerocallis ‘Fractured Symmetry’ is a 75% polymerous 2013 introduction.

H. 'Fractured Symmetry' has a commanding presence in the garden standing 43 inches tall with registered blooms of 9 inches, though at times, they are even larger. A trait that I love about this huge twisted crispate Unusual Form is that there is no symmetry between blooms -- each bloom has its own personality and does its own thing providing wonderful diversity of blooms.

Deeply fragrant with a semi-evergreen nature the flowers are generally a mauve salmon blend that sometimes can lean a little on the pinkish side. The large muted purple eye provides wonderful contrast of the base color and highlights the large and deep chartreuse throat.

H. 'Fractured Symmetry' begins its blooms at the peak of the season so I registered it as a mid-season late bloomer with an adequate bud count to be a great season extender.

Hybridizers will find H. 'Fractured Symmetry' a bit difficult to work with as it has that bright yellow pollen and proved to be a difficult pod setter in the season of 2012 (of course we did have a major heat wave with 10 consecutive days over 100° during its bloom). However, if you like your polymerous daylilies huge and tall then the extra effort of working with H. 'Fractured Symmetry' will be worth it. Just growing this beast of a poly is pure enjoyment, too.

Genetically, H. 'Fractured Symmetry' should have strong pollen and be a great pod setter because both its parents are strong in these categories. Perhaps this is just that generation that misses things. My 2012 introduction H. 'In Celebration of Life' is the pod parent and the pollen parent is the incredible H. 'Carolina Octopus.' Next season I plan to cross it back and forth with its pod parent.

Introduced in limited supply, H. 'Fractured Symmetry' will retain its value and demand for years to come.
