Dan Lovett's 2006 Introductions

REIGNING PURPLE         $25 df

Lovett, Dan     30” Sev EM Dip 7.5” Re Wine Purple self, Unusual Form.

[(Indian Giver x Uniquely Different) x Yabba Dabba Doo] x Purple Many Faces

This flower won Best Seedling in the Mid-Carolina Daylily Show in 2004. It was the first time in the Club’s history of over 10 years of daylily shows that a seedling made it to the head table. It also won the Best Seedling contest in the 2005 Region 15 regional tour of gardens.

The unique trait of this daylily is it’s clear color and clean, almost pristine appearance. At 7.5” and crispate form, it is well branched and multiplies well, which provides ample buds during bloom season. It is moderately pod fertile. Pollen is good. I have used it heavily in hybridizing and it has given some good results. (See D24 in Dan’s Selected seedlings)

The Pod Parent of REIGNING PURPLE has the garden name of “Different Indian” and is the mamma of many of my selected seedlings. It is a wonderful parent, very vigorous and very fertile. It has a nice 5 ½” deep purple flower. It has everything you want in a daylily except that it is just not unique or exceptional in bloom quality.  But it has given me exceptionally good offspring and I keep going back to it because it I know that it will give me nice kids. (See D02, D03, D06 & D09 in Dan’s Selected seedlings).

ROMAN RULER          $35sf

Lovett, Dan           38”, Sev, M Dip 6.5” Purple self, yellow-green throat, Unusual Form

[(Indian Giver x Uniquely Different) x Yabba Dabba Doo] x Savannah Banana Split

I named this flower ROMAN RULER because the deep purple color was the color of royalty in the time of the Roman Empire, when purple garments signified wealth and power.  This is the feeling that it gives, when at clump size, it seems to rule as a monarch over the entire bed.

The nice, deep purple color came from its pod parent (garden name “Different Indian”) and it’s size from Savannah Banana Split. The 6.5” bloom size of this cascading beauty is deceiving because it measures from tip to tip almost 12” (L = 5.875, W = 1.75, R = 3.4). Pods are  difficult. Pollen is good.

This cream to near white self opens flat. The petals are complimented by a small ruffled gold edge. It has good branching and bud count  and blooms and reblooms. It is fertile both ways and is a vigorous  grower sometimes producing  lots of perliferations. Fertile both ways.

WINE TASTING            $35sf

LOVETT, J      2006

30” Tet  MRe SEv  5 1/2”          (BLACK AMBROSIA X AWESOME BLOSSOM)

One of the darkest flowers that I grow, WINE TASTING is tall and the yellow green throat really shows off the wine purple blossoms. It  has a dark band and a white edge that goes part way round the petals.

Like most dark colored flowers this one does best with some shade. Fertile both ways.

EARTH, WIND AND FIRE       sold out

[(Indian Giver x Uniquely Different) x Yabba Dabba Doo] x Savannah Banana Split

34” tall, SEv, 7” bloom, 2 branches, 12 buds, cascading unusual form.

Sometimes I see the predominate color of this flower as lavender, but other times I see a color more akin to pink, as this picture shows. So I will call it lavender-pink. Either way, it is a beautiful and complex flower. There is a narrow rose-wine chevron eye that is pushed out onto the petals by a beautiful shaded yellow throat. Both petals and sepals curl back slightly and give emphasis to the chevron eye and throat. Petals and sepals have a small edge-line of yellow matching the throat, and are gently ruffled. This cascading Unusual Form is very consistent from bloom to bloom and the overall clump appearance has a clean and crisp look.

The 7” flowers measure a 3:1 ratio. It reblooms well for us in Zone 7A and easily sets seed. Fertile both ways, I have used it generously and have some promising seedlings coming from it.

BABY SO BIG          $25 df
Lovett, J 2004

This flower is all about color; a beautiful baby pink that is set off by the green, then yellow throat. When it opens in the morning it has beautiful ruffles on the petals. About mid-morning the petals begin to roll back into a very round well formed flower. The blossoms on this flower reminds me of the beautiful pink cheeks of a baby and an adoring BABY’S CARESS. Fertile both ways.

An unusual trait is that the mature foliage has cream yellow spots on it. It has been a favorite of garden visitors. A great garden flower that is fertile both ways.

28” tet EMRe Sev 6 ¼” (UNKNOWN X DIAMONDS & PEARLS)

The form of this large rose pink flower is very round, full and overlapped and is accentuated by it’s large size. The center displays a green heart that blends into yellow, then into a very subtle band of peach orange. The rose pink petals have ruffles that are edged in cream yellow and the petal ruffling extends downward into the throat area.. HAUNTING ME adds a very regal appearance in the garden. PALM OF HIS HAND
        sold out
Lovett, J 2004

34” tet EMRe SEv 7” (IDA’S BRAID X SUN FUN HOLIDAY)

It is especially satisfying to produce such a nice flower from one of my own introductions, SUN FUN HOLIDAY. The extremely wide gold edge was probably gleaned from IDA’S BRAID. At 7”, it really shows off it’s gorgeous light pink petals and wide gold edge. The 34” scape presents the flowers beautifully and shows off these large flowers to all in the garden. It is fertile both ways.

WAKE UP WILLIE
      $25 df
Lovett J 2004

29” tet MRe SEv 6 ¾” [(MOONLIT MASQUERADE x GOLDEN COMPASS) X MASK OF TIME]

WAKE UP WILLIE is another very large flower in this year’s introductions. And WILLIE will wake you up! It is large and showy and commands your attention from anywhere in the garden. The big yellow green center and the purple eye make quite a contrast. The lavender rose petals have a small purple edge and the sepals have a small cream edge. It is fertile both ways. As with most dark colored daylilies this one needs some shade. Fertile both ways.

PRE-2005 DAYLILY INTRODUCTIONS PRICE LIST

Dan Lovett's Introductions

BITE THE BULLET       $15 df

Lovett, D. 2003 30” Sev M Dip 7” Re Yellow self Spi.

(Cheaspeake Crab Legs x Savannah Banana Split)

This is my first introduction and my personal favorite at that time of anything I had hybridized. I love the pure yellow shade with the lighter edge tone on the long and twisting petals. They give wonderful motion in the garden as they bounce up and down and float in gentle breezes. This flower likes hot weather, with the petals getting longer and narrower as the bloom season progresses. It is especially outstanding on rebloom. Another nice trait is it's consistency. Each bloom has the same appearance.

The twisting, curling, lightly ruffled petals hang down and give the bloom an appearance of depth. Scape height is 30" initially and taller on rebloom, over 40". Ratio is 4.6:1, petal length is 6.0" and bloom diameter is 7”. Bud count is 12. It multiplies rapidly and gives an abundance of scapes which helps offset bud count on the low side. Difficult pod parent but pollen is easy.

BITE THE BULLET has given me some wonderfull offspring.

SMITHEREENS       sold out

Lovett, D. 2003. 26” Dor M Dip 7.5” Re Deep wine w/ large yelloe-green throat that extends onto petals as mid-rib.

(Red Ribbons x Wildest Dreams)

When this first bloomed I commented that it looked like an explosion occurred and the flower had been, "blown to smithereens". "Smithereens" stuck as it’s name and it describes it pretty well! This is one of those spiders whose appearence on some days is wild, with petals and sepals sticking out asunder in crazy orientation, like an explosion, and other days they twist and curl and drape down with a more conventional spider appearance.

It has deep wine petals and a big yellow throat that extends far out onto the petals as a narrow midrib. Scape height is 26"with up to 20 buds. Ratio is 5.9:1, petal length is 6.625" and bloom diameter is 7.5". Difficult pod parent; pollen is good.
