Dan Lovett's Daylily Seedlings

D06   [(Indian Giver x Uniquely Different) x Yabba Dabba Doo]  x Becky Adam’s Unknown Purple seedling

This is a big, husky Unusual Form with strong scapes and a rich, deep purple color (that my digital camera did not capture well. The true color is much darker). It is a 40” dormant with 8”-8 ½” cascading blooms; 14-16 buds on 2 branches. Strangely, the first blooming year in my seedling bed it would not set seed, but last year after relocating it to another bed I was able to get a few seed off of it.

A word about the Pollen Parent; Becky Adams is a good friend who lives about an hour’s drive away. She is such a good friend that she lets me have pollen of my choice from her outstanding collection of spiders. One year in her garden I spotted a really outstanding tall purple spidery bloom in her “seedling” bed. Becky is not serious about hybridizing, but she had made some seed out of curiosity. In fact, more seed than she could plant. So she crowded them into a small side bed and didn’t bother to identify them. This pollen parent was deep in the narrow, crowded rows and I finally was able to reach her purple seedling beauty and get some pollen. I took it home and used it immediately. The end of Becky’s story is that this seedling won the Region 15 Best Seedling on the garden tour that year. But poor Becky forgot to mark it and never was able to find it again after it finished blooming!
