2007 Introductions!
 |
MAJOR TEASE (Major Mitchell’s Headdress x Unknown) Tet Sev EMO Ext Mid-late. I love that eye! This flower is a specialist flower. It is a small plant with the flowers just above the foliage so a great place to show off Major Tease will be in the border. It has healthy foliage and with room will clump moderately fast. Pod and pollen fertile, it is also going to be an excellent hybridizing flower for people who are looking for that special eye and I have used it in my own hybridizing program. The 5” flowers are on 15” scapes with 12-15 buds. ($75 SF) |

MOJAVE MORNING (Calling All Angels X Startle) ) Tet Sev EMO Ext Mid. I chose Mojave Morning for introduction because it always looks great, every day, no matter what time of day! A unique and beautiful color combination, the raspberry pink fades slightly during the day and is framed by the large gold edge that is mirrored by the yellow throat. This is not a specialist flower. This is a flower for every garden! The 5.5” flowers are displayed perfectly on 4-5 way branched 27” scapes above good clean foliage. It has 20+ buds and is pollen and pod fertile. The color and genetics are unique and I can’t wait to see the kids from this one! ($100 SF) |

PETTICOAT LEADER (Petticoat Swirls x Leader of the Pack) Tet Dor EMO Ext Mid-Late Hi, this is Nick Grossmann, Mike’s son. I am currently in 8th Grade and this is my first intro. I have to say this is a very beautiful double. Later in the day, Petticoat Leader becomes more of a pink color, but stays just as beautiful. It doubles about 95% of the time, is open right away in the morning and stays open all day with its flowers well above the foliage. Petticoat Leader is also fertile both ways and the 5” flowers are on 25” scapes with 20+ buds. ($50 SF) |
Additional Northern Lights Daylilies available for 2007
A BIT OF SPICE (Evermore Charm x Heavenly Beginnings) Wow! Look at that wild edge and it doesn’t depend on heat! Early in the day the flowers have a noticeable spice overlay but later they will be very bright yellows. Flowers are carried just above the healthy foliage. Very vigorous and fast clumping, pollen fertile but only moderately pod fertile and a unique flower. The 5.5” flowers are on 26” scapes with 16-18 buds. ($35 SF)
WILD MAJOR (Just A Tease x Major Mitchell’s Headdress) I used to say that I only liked bagels but I find myself more and more attracted to the beautiful and exotic forms like Wild Major. It is a good consistent opener with 6” flowers on a 29” scape wih 16-20 buds that don’t spot. It is moderately vigorous and fertile both ways. Limited ($35 SF)
NORTHERN ROSE (Evermore Lights x Startle) This is my favorite baby from my Startle breeding program so far. It has much wider petals than any of my other Startle babies and is 6” in size. It is also a very well rounded plant overall. Flowers are nicely spaced and well over the clean foliage. It is moderately vigorous and even repeats some years in my zone 4 garden. It is 35” tall, bud count is a respectable 16-20 and it is very pod and pollen fertile. I’ve used it extensively in my hybridizing. ($75 SF)
MEMORIES OF FUJI (Fires of Fuji x Heavenly Beginnings) The picture doesn’t do this flower justice. It has a very rich velvety appearance that lasts all day and into the night. Memories of Fuji looks similar to Fires of Fuji but is taller, larger and hardier than its pod parent. It is 98% double, opens well, is moderately vigorous and fertile both ways. All in all it is exactly what I am looking for in one of my new intros, one step forward from its parents and like no other double that is hardy up here. The 6.5” flowers are on 29” scapes with 14-16 buds. ($20 SF)
MAJOR MITCHELL'S HEADDRESS: Tet Sev EMO Mid-late with a 15 inch scape. It has 3 way braching and up to 15 buds per scape with a 6 inch flower. My brother named this flower after a type of cockatoo parrot from Australia whose extravagant plumage is the same color as this equally extravagant flower. MMH has a huge bright red trianglular eye that screams at me from across the garden every morning. The color on different computer screens varies but just imagine a very vibrant bright red color and that is what you will see in the garden. The eye is set in a very pleasing light cream with a full red bubbly picotee surrounding it. I know of no other flower available with such a large bright red triangular eye and am very excited about the seedlings that it is beginning to produce. Hardy in zone 4, vigorous and fertile both ways. ($25 SF)
SWEET KISSES: (English Cameo x Strawberry Fields Forever). Tet Dor EMO Ext Mid 20 inch scape. It has 4-5 way branching and 18 buds per scape with a 5 3/4 inch flower. A pretty cream flower with a pink eye and edge that tends to open multiple flowers at once. It is vigorous, hardy in zone 4 and fertile both ways. ($15 SF)
EVERMORE LIGHTS: (Ferengi Gold x Ed Brown). Tet Sev Mid 24 inch scape. It has 4 way branching and 22 buds per scape with a 5 1/2 inch flower. EVERMORE LIGHTS is the first in a series of Evermore flowers. These flowers will all be beautiful, garden performers but what will really set them apart is that an established clump will rebloom in zone 4 where daylilies aren’t reliable rebloomers. In addition the edge doesn’t depend on heat and it can be blooming when it frosts in the third week of Sept. Hardy in zone 4, vigorous, fertile both ways and my most used flower for hybridizing. ($15 SF)
BUBBLE GUM DREAMS: (English Cameo x Strawberry Fields Forever). Tet Sev Mid 28 inch scape. It has 3 way branching and 18 buds per scape with a 5 3/4 inch flower. BUBBLE GUM DREAMS is an intense, impressive pink with a dark pink eye and edge above a yellow throat. This is always a favorite and I had someone asking me if they could have it again today when they were visiting me. It is vigorous, hardy in zone 4 and fertile both ways. ($10 SF)
THE ADMIRAL’S GOLD: (Ferengi Gold x Admiral’s Braid). Tet Sev Mid 26 inch scape. It has 4 way branching with 30+ buds per scape and a 5 3/4 inch flower. THE ADMIRAL’S GOLD is a beautiful flower, light yellow with a ruffled gold edge above a yellow throat. This is one of my favorites because it always has a long bloom season and excellent healthy dark green foliage with very good resistance to the fungus that causes leaf streak. This plant is hardy in zone 4, vigorous and fertile both ways. ($10 SF)
GOLDEN GOLIATH: (Solar Music x Ferengi Gold). Tet Sev. Mid - late. 38 inch scape. It has 4 way branching with 20 buds per scape and a 6 1/2 inch flower. GOLDEN GOLIATH is a very large plant with a large brilliant yellow flower and a green throat. It has beautiful ruffles as well as sculpting in the throat. It has outstanding substance and looks great when I come home in the evening no matter how hard it rained or how hot it is. Vigorous, hardy in zone 4 and very fertile both ways. ($15 SF)

Shipping and general information
We are happy to offer shipping from April 24 to the end of Sept. Shipping is $8 for the first plant and $1 for each additional plant. We would like our customers to understand that the plants they receive in the spring will have very large roots but not much top growth. However, the spring shipped plants should have a good chance of blooming the first summer and while the flowers will be much prettier the second year, you may get a chance to see the flowers and if you like use them for hybridizing.
The gardens are located on a hillside and have rich loam soil with a relatively high pH. We fertilize our plants and water them as needed. The descriptions, height, bud count etc are for plants grown outside in zone four under these conditions. We expect that our plants will also perform well in the south due to the fact that much of our breeding stock is from the South. We had rust the fall of 2005 so we are spraying the breeding and sales plants. The seedlings are not sprayed so as to be able to evaluate them for disease and insect resistance.
We sell by mail order, e-mail or in person by private appointment and include bonuses with each order. We are not set up for retail sales or drop-ins. No international shipments at this time.
Please make check or money order payable to Mike Grossmann. Thank you for your order. I hope you enjoy these daylilies as much as I do. You will receive large, healthy, blooming size plants. My own introductions are guaranteed to live for a year from receipt. |
