Welcome to our garden...This is a ‘hybridizer’s garden’, with a lot of daylilies in close quarters, without companion plants or grouping by color for garden value. We welcome visitors, but please call or e-mail first. No smoking in garden, please (allergies). Peak bloom is June 30 – July 15, with earliest blooming from the end of May and late cultivars not beginning bloom until 1 August. We live, garden, and hybridize daylilies within the city of Allentown. Our yard (slightly over ¼ acre) holds about 250 named cultivars, 300 seedlings selected for observation, and 6000 unselected seedlings. We are Zone 6b and over-winter our daylilies without mulch. The garden has always been rust free. We grow primarily northern hardy (most but not all dormant) early blooming tetraploids, large flowered edged and variegated-eyed tetraploids, and variegated-eyed and metallic-eyed small diploids. We emphasize extended bloom -- folks with day jobs should come home to daylilies which are still fresh and attractive. We don’t seek out doubles or spiders (one can only fit so much on a small property!) though we sometimes have some pop up in the hybridizing. Our registered cultivars are sold through Tim and Michelle Glick of Manatwany Creek Farm, which is across the road from Glick Nursery and Greenhouse in Oley PA. They have a large collection of northern-hardy daylilies from other hybridizers (including many Stout introductions) in addition to ours and sell in the garden and by mail. Many of our future introductions can be seen growing at Manatawny Creek Farm. Most of our introductions are made with very limited quantity. Pictures of most previous introductions are on their website: http://www.manatawnycreekfarm.com/ [click ‘Varieties’ and then click ‘Skinner’] Most years we offer diploid and tetraploid seeds for sale, beginning in December. Our most recent introductions and many probable future introductions are shown on this website. Ron & Megan Skinner |
