2006 Introductions

BABY BARRACUDA

(N36-1) Obsidian x Barracuda Bay, 30” EMRe 5” Tet Sev, 5-7 branches, 40+ buds.  This performer is a 5” dark maroon with a black eye and small teeth.  It has fantastic branching with laterals like stair steps up the scape.  The bud count is impressive as well…sometimes as many as 60 buds!  I have seen as many as 5 open blooms on one scape, and 3-4 is common.  Baby Baracuda should be an interesting parent for teeth and does pass branching on to its seedlings.  Fertile both ways and a sure fire ribbon winner!  SF $125.00

BIG HIT

(Q21-1) Antique Fringe x Cherokee Pass, 29” EM 6” Tet Dor, 4 branches, 25 buds.  This beauty is a coral peach/pink with red eye and edge.  It can produce a double edge with a narrow orange border outside the red.  This is a good show flower with excellent plant habits.  The color combination is striking and helped it to earn the “Best Seedling” award at the 2004 Piedmont Daylily Show.  Fertile both ways.  DF $60.00

BLACK MARKET

(N8-1) Obsidian x Black Briar Bay, 27” EM 5.5” Tet Sev, 3 to 4 branches, 15-20 buds.  Black Market is a near-black similar to Night Wings in depth of color.  What sets it apart, however, is that it branches and has much better bud count.  This is an excellent choice to add to your collection or lines.  Fertile both ways.  DF $70.00

EYES OF MY HEART

(P52-1) Strawberry Candy x Scarlet Orbit, 25” EMRe 4.25” Tet Sev, 3 branches, 15 buds.  This heart stopper is a full sibling to Desert Fire, but its coloration is completely different.  The flower is bright red with a dark red eye and edges.  This was one of those wild crosses that surprises…and delights!  Good rebloom.  Fertile both ways.  DF $40.00

BUTTER AND SUGAR

(Q1-4) Blizzard Bay x Great White, 24” MLRe 5.5” Tet Dor, 3 branches, 15-18 buds.  This stunning flower is a cream white with a golden yellow braided edge.  Its yellow throat radiates out on to the petals and draws in garden visitors.  Butter And Sugar is notable for its rebloom, excellent growth and because it is DORMANT!  Fertile both ways.  DF $75.00

DESERT FIRE

(P52-4) Strawberry Candy x Scarlet Orbit, 26” EMRe 4.5” Tet Ev, 3 branches, 15 buds.  This striking flower is one of those rare reverse bi-colors.  Desert Fire features orange petals with red sepals and a red eye.  I crossed this to Wyoming Wildfire and have some brilliant seedlings coming.  This would be a great addition to your collection or lines.  Fertile both ways.  SF $40.00

CAPTIVE HEART

(N29-1) Elizabeth Salter x Splendid Touch, 23” MRe 5.75” Tet Sev Fra, 3 branches, 15 buds.  This flower’s deep pink color and light yellow edge  demand attention, but its gorgeous ruffling really sets it apart.  Captive Heart is a full sibling to Love Comes Softly (2005 Introduction), but the color tones are about as far apart as two pinks can be.  As a first year seedling, it bloomed double, but only an occasional bloom will double now.  One thing is for sure…this is one pretty flower, and the warmer it gets, the better it is.  Good rebloom.  Pollen fertile only.  DF $60.00

COVER STORY

(Q5-1) Taos x Great White, 29” M 6” Tet Sev, 3-4 branches, 20 buds.  This is a flower that truly lives up to its name.  The smoky pink petals contrast nicely with the lighter sepals, and the ½ inch piecrust ruffles really complete the picture.  The iris world would call the color a blue pink, but it is really not blue.  In any case, Cover Story is both different and beautiful.  When making the cross, I was aiming for a white or cream.  What I got was far more interesting.  I can’t wait to see which way the seedlings go!  Fertile both ways.  DF $75.00

LOVES COMES SOFTLY

N29-2 (Elizabeth Salter X Splendid Touch) Tet. 29", 6", Dor. 15 to 18 buds. This was another very difficult cross as Elizabeth Salter is not a good pod parent. It took many crosses to get two seedlings, but both were "knockouts." LOVE COMES SOFTLY is a cream pink or better described as a cream with a pink blush set off by a nice green throat. It has nice pie-crust ruffles on a classic form. Even though it is a soft color, you will not miss this one due to its height, size and beauty. Fertile both ways. $40.00 df

STREET SMARTS

N5-1 (Nordic Night X Killer) Tet. 29", 5½", EM, Sev, 15 to 20 buds. To me, this is a dark maroon although some people might say it is dark purple. In any case, it is a pretty flower with a cram midrib that normally is more prominent than the slide shows. Like my other two 2005 introductions, it is large and tall and commands your attention. I always liked Killer and STREET SMARTS stands out even more with that cream midrib. Fertile both ways. $40.00 df

CROSSFIRE

L39-1 (Ed Murray X Chicago Apache) Tet. 32", 5½", Late, Dor. Re. 3 to 4 branches, 15 to 20 buds. CROSSFIRE is a clear smooth ruby red with light ruffling. I like taller daylilies and this one stands at 32". Will not make many shows as it blooms after most show dates. The late bloom is what sets CROSSFIRE apart as it blooms later than any red I grow and then reblooms for me. Even though it came out of Ed Murray, CROSSFIRE is easily fertile both ways. $40.00 df
